The Winner of The Ask Michel Fortin Your Question Contest is…

  • Google Buzz

fortin2.jpgLast week I gave you the chance to “Play With My New Favorite Toy” (Michel Fortin’s Brain), and ask my friend, mentor and million-dollar copywriter Michel Fortin any question you wanted.

In that blog post I promised that I would pick the best single question and that one person would get their question answered right here in my blog, by Michel himself.

The response was fantastic! That post received 17 comments/questions.

And… As promised, I’ve picked one of those questions to be answered right here, today, by Michel himself.

But wait there’s more… ;-)

As you know I’m a BIG believer in over-delivering. (And, I like to reward those who actually take action.)

Well… Michel ALSO believes in over-delivering. So I was thrilled (but not surprised) when he offered to answer not just one, but the top THREE questions you asked. (I told ya’ 3 was a powerful number!)

So… The first “Winner” is Fred Black!

Here is Fred’s question:

Michel;

As a musician, copywriter, and marketing expert, you have a unique combination of skills and experiences. In addition to being a programmer and aspiring Internet business entrepreneur,I’m an amateur singer/songwriter.

I’m building an Internet business to create income so that I can work less and spend more time doing what I want to do, which is music. Do you think it’s possible to use Internet business and marketing techniques such as those taught by you, Eric Graham, James Brausch, etc. to successfully promote and even make a profit from self produced CDs, and related music products? I’m not 20 anymore, I have a family, and I can’t take the “normal” route of playing in bars and clubs every night to promote my music. In other words, I want to do it “backwards”.

If you think it’s possible, what are the significant differences between what you’d do to sell the typical Internet marketing course vs. selling a music CD? What are the steps would you take, things you would implement, etc?

Thanks,
Fred Black

Now I’ll turn the keyboard over to Michel for his reply…

fortin2.jpgAbsolutely.

There are no real differences. Essentially, you can apply Internet marketing to sell your music online as you would, say, a book, art, or anything else.

My friend Armand Morin, as Michael Lee Austin, promoted and sold his music CD using Internet marketing only. His success is groundbreaking to the point that he was #1 on Amazon in Country Music, beating Rascall Flatts, and #56 on Billboard’s charts, without selling a single CD in stores — other than using pure Internet marketing techniques.

You can see his site:

Now, to specifically deal with the music industry is not something I’m particularly well-versed in. But all good Internet marketing, marketing (in general), and copywriting strategies come into play and work just as well as any other typical business on the Internet.

Also, I believe — and this is still “Secretive” at this point –that Armand is going to put out a special, new course on Internet marketing for the music industry. So I’d keep a look out for that.

There are several courses already out there, many of them I know, bought, used, or recommend. For example:

The most important step, I believe, is to be prolific and viralize yourself. The first means to be everywhere, and talk about in as many places as possible. The other is to create demos and have them downloadable, such as through iTunes and music-related blogs and so forth.

There are typical places you certainly can go are:

MySpace Music
RentMyBand.com
GetSigned.com
Agencies, like CorporateArtists.com

And of course, having a website of your own, with your own domain, is critical.

Hope this helps.

Now back to Eric:

Thanks so much for that great answer Michel.

Stay tuned to my blog to discover who the other 2 winning questions were submitted by, and read Michel’s fantastic answers to those as well!

Happy Testing!

  • Thank you Eric and Michel!
Michel, thank you for your advice and pointers; I’ll put them to use. Michael Lee Austin’s success is very encouraging; I was not familiar with him until reading your answer.
