It is with a sad heart that I make this post. I just learned from John Reese that one of my mentors has passed away.
Gary Halbert was without question one of the greatest copywriters who ever lived.
Whether you agreed with his style of teaching or not, the results his letters are undisputed.
Gary’s death will leave a big void in the marketing community for years to come.
However, his teachings and his life’s work will live on. Just a I did, legions of new, young copywriters and direct marketers will forever have Gary’s teachings, and letters to study and learn from.
If you never had a chance to meet or learn from Gary, you missed out on a valuable (and profitable) experience. However, you still have the opportunity to learn from this true master of persuasion.
Take some time and visit Gary’s site, The Gary Halbert Letter:

I have every issue of Gary’s newsletter printed out and in a special 3 ring binder I keep on my desk. His wisdom and insight have been invaluable to me over the years.
My deepest sympathies go out to Gary Halbert’s son Bond, his long time girl friend Sirian, his family and closest friends.
Gary will be deeply missed by many, many people.
Rest in Peace Gary.
Eric

I saw this post in my RSS and had no idea who Gary was (noob). I went to the link that you provided and read one of the letter which absolutely blew me away. What a guy! I was curious how long he’s been on the net for so I whois’d him. Two interesting things I found out: 1) the newsletter site has been around since 2001 2) it expires in about 3 weeks — a real shame…
Hi Eric:
I gained a lot of good insights from Gary’s web newsletter and also the online telephone interviews he did with various marketing experts.
I did not know him personally, but he seemed very willing to help out those of us new to the process of learning effective copywriting.
I wrote him some time agao and he sent me (at no charge) a number of his newsletters pertaining to a subject I wanted to learn about. I wrote back to him telling him how much I appreciated his gesture and thoughtfulness.
I’m sorry to hear of his passing.
Yet another example that we should enjoy every day and every person we deal with — we never know when people we like, such as gary, will be gone.
Thanks for your blog post and your alert.
Dennis
Oh dear – that is very sad indeed. Gary’s letters could awaken a dead man and push him into ordering the products that the letter were selling.
I have experienced the excitement of his letters – rather unconventional. Sorry to hear this news, Eric
[...] Marketing Legend Gary Halbert Has Died… [...]
I couldn’t believe the email in my inbox from Harlan Kilstein with subject heading ‘Halbert you Barstard! You owe me lunch.’ to learn that Gary Halbert had died just this last weekend.
Gary was the most hard hitting, face smacking, bolt upright blunt writer I have ever read. He was the first person that really grabbed my attention to the point of being bolted into continuing to read his articles.
He made me squirm, he made me remark to myself, ‘You can’t say that sort of thing and get away with it. People will stop reading.’ But I noticed that I kept reading every word to the end. Then invariably ended up buying the product.
I am shocked. And I am going to miss those emails announcing another new Gary Halbert article has been posted to his website.
Thank you for your contribution Gary.
Blessings
David Adams
PS Harlen’s email went on to say that Gary said to him ‘Let’s have lunch next week’ but Gary never made it.
