As I mentioned in one of my latest blog posts, something I try and do at the end of each year is take 3 or 4 days, lock myself up in a hotel and conduct what I call my “goal setting retreat”.

During these sessions, I review the previous 12 months and plan out my business (and life) strategy for the next 12 months.

These periods have often been some of the highest leverage and ROI activities I’ve ever engaged in.

Several of my biggest businesses and jumps in income, and dramatic changes in my lifestyle have come out of these multi-day planning sessions.

One of the key activities in my goal setting retreat is laying out my 12 month plan for each of my businesses and companies.

Having a detailed, month-by-month, year long plan for your business creates a level of focus, direction and momentum that you simply cannot get any other way.

Unfortunately, very few online business owners take the time to create such a plan. Or worse, if they do create a 12 month plan, they don’t effectively follow through with the plan.

(You’re not going to make that mistake. Right?)

An important question to ask yourself during your planning session is, “What can I do to make my clients or customers lives better?”

This is a question that can make a dramatic impact on your business and the products or services you offer.

Too often, business owners simply ask, “How can I make more money?”

Or, “How can I get my existing clients to buy more and buy more often?”

And while these are valuable questions to ask, the answers you get to the question about “making your clients lives better” will almost always give you the answer to “how to make more money” or “how to get clients to buy more”.

The reason why is because, (as I often say) “money is simply a measure of exchanged value”.

The more value you give to others, the more money you will receive as a natural consequence.

It’s actually impossible to deliver more value, and not receive more money.

Now, without getting too spiritual or metaphysical, you won’t always necessarily receive the increase in money from the exact area, client or person you delivered the additional value to, but you will receive the increase for somewhere.

I’ve seen this happen in my own life over and over. You simply cannot deliver more value than you get back in return.

This is one of the reasons that I’m willing to share high quality information and test results so freely on my blog. Many of the videos I post to my blog could actually be paid products. I try to deliver that much value in them.

What I want to happen is for somebody to take some of the free advice I give on my blog, apply it in their own business, and then see such an increase in sales and profits that they naturally want to spend some of that increase in profits hiring me to write copy, run testing or help them take things to an even higher level.

The more I give, the more I receive.

So I highly recommend if you want to make 2010 the best year of your life, you sit down (preferably with a coach, mentor or accountability partner who has already achieved the level of success you want to achieve) and plan out your 12 month strategy.

And as a core part of that strategy, ask yourself “What can I do to make my clients or customers lives better?”

The answer to that question, when put into the framework of a custom developed 12 month plan will absolutely transform your life and make 2010 the most profitable year of your life!

Merry CHRISTmas and Happy New Year!

  • Eric,

Just found the site. I couldn’t agree more with this. I didn’t consciously set year goals for my new internet business. Yet, very consciously I’ve set big goals and I have weekly and monthly reviews. So far business is great! Yet, more to do as I learn more.

The bigger question is where to have my goal retreat for 2011? I’m hearing the words Thailand.

    Happy Travels
