Taking the Hacker Safe Conversion Boost to the Next Level…
In yesterday’s post I shared with you some of the outstanding results my clients and I have been seeing by using the Hacker Safe Logo.
The logo is a huge trust builder, gives you a PR 7 backlink and actually helps make your server more secure.
However, even though the logo does give a nice conversion boost in most cases, one thing that has always bugged me is the fact that the logo opens in a new window, with address bars, links bars, tool bars and all the other distractions.
I have ample test data that shows that by removing the address bar and other bars from a new window you open, you can reduce the potential for visitor distraction and improve conversion rates.
Further, during the usability testing I regularly do for my clients, I’ve watched time and time again visitors click on something that opens in a new window with full address, link and tool bars, to only get distracted and begin navigating away from the original site in the new window.
To make matters worse in the Hacker Safe example, in the new window they show several prominent calls to action for both merchants AND customers to go off on a navigational tangent and learn more about Hacker Safe or even “Shop” their merchant directory.
Now of course I also have ample test data showing that this kind of non-sense HURTS conversion and is a major distraction. (Fortunately the credibility and trust boost the Hacker Safe logo produces more than makes up for this “conversion leak”, but I’ve always wished that they would tighten things up a bit.)
So something I’ve done to solve the problem is using special code that eliminates these distractions and leaks.
Here is the code:
<!-- START SCANALERT CODE -->
<a href="https://www.scanalert.com/RatingVerify?
ref=www.YourURL.com" onClick="Popup=window.open
('https://www.scanalert.com/RatingVerify?ref=www.YourURL.com','Popup','toolbar=no,location=no,
status=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,resizable=no, width=550,height=350,left=230,top=150'); return false;">
<img width="94" height="54" border="0"
src="//images.scanalert.com/meter/www.YourURL.com/23.gif" alt="HACKER SAFE certified sites prevent over 99.9% of hacker crime." oncontextmenu="alert('Copying Prohibited by Law - HACKER SAFE is a Trademark of ScanAlert'); return false;"/></a>
<!-- END SCANALERT CODE -->
Okay… For those of you who don’t speak “geek”, basically what this does is, it opens the verification page in a tool and address bar free window.
Big help…
But further (and it took some playing around with the window size to do this) by removing the scroll bars, and resize functionality, THEN setting the size of the window to 550 wide and 350 high, the “above the fold” section is ONLY the verification data. So visitors will NOT see (or be distracted by) the additional links and calls to action inside the new window.
Click on the examples below to see what I mean:

Standard Hacker Safe Logo Version

The Conversion Doctor’s “Hacker Safe Tune-up” Version
I’ve only recently begun test rounds on my and some client’s sites with this “tune-up”, but the results are already promising. One high traffic/sales site I’m testing this on is showing around a 28% improvement vs. the “old distracting” way…
To use this code on your own site all you really need to change is the URL (provided of course you are already Hacker Safe certified.)
So… If you’re using the Hacker Safe logo, I’m sure it’s helping conversions, but to tighten things up further and eliminate any potential “conversion leaks” try out my “Hacker Safe Tune-up” code and let me know YOUR test results!
Happy Testing!
